Surface MIMO: Using Conductive Surfaces For MIMO Between Small Devices
As connected devices continue to decrease in size, we explore the idea of
leveraging everyday surfaces such as tabletops and walls to augment the
wireless capabilities of devices. Specifically, we introduce Surface MIMO, a
technique that enables MIMO communication between small devices via surfaces
coated with conductive paint or covered with conductive cloth. These surfaces
act as an additional spatial path that enables MIMO capabilities without
increasing the physical size of the devices themselves. We provide an extensive
characterization of these surfaces that reveal their effect on the propagation
of EM waves. Our evaluation shows that we can enable additional spatial streams
using the conductive surface and achieve average throughput gains of 2.6-3x for
small devices. Finally, we also leverage the wideband characteristics of these
conductive surfaces to demonstrate the first Gbps surface communication system
that can directly transfer bits through the surface at up to 1.3 Gbps.Comment: MobiCom '1
Electrochemical and spectroscopic properties of technetium in fused alkali metal chlorides
The behavior of metallic technetium in chloride melts was studied for the first time. The experiments were conducted in NaCl-2CsCl eutectic melt at 550 °C using high temperature electronic absorption spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry and chronopotentiometry. The anodic dissolution of Tc results in the formation of a mixture of Tc(IV) and a lower oxidation state species. Cyclic voltammograms of technetium-containing melts show two cathodic and two associated anodic peaks. Effective chiral-spin Hamiltonian for odd-numbered coupled Heisenberg chains
An system of odd number of coupled Heisenberg spin chains
is studied using a degenerate perturbation theory, where is the number of
coupled chains. An effective chain Hamiltonian is derived explicitly in terms
of two spin half degrees of freedom of a closed chain of sites, valid in
the regime the inter-chain coupling is stronger than the intra-chain coupling.
The spin gap has been calculated numerically using the effective Hamiltonian
for for a finite chain up to ten sites. It is suggested that the
ground state of the effective Hamiltonian is correlated, by examining

Revisiting the Equivalence Problem for Finite Multitape Automata
The decidability of determining equivalence of deterministic multitape
automata (or transducers) was a longstanding open problem until it was resolved
by Harju and Karhum\"{a}ki in the early 1990s. Their proof of decidability
yields a co_NP upper bound, but apparently not much more is known about the
complexity of the problem. In this paper we give an alternative proof of
decidability, which follows the basic strategy of Harju and Karhumaki but
replaces their use of group theory with results on matrix algebras. From our
proof we obtain a simple randomised algorithm for deciding language equivalence
of deterministic multitape automata and, more generally, multiplicity
equivalence of nondeterministic multitape automata. The algorithm involves only
matrix exponentiation and runs in polynomial time for each fixed number of
tapes. If the two input automata are inequivalent then the algorithm outputs a
word on which they differ
Torsional nodeless vibrations of quaking neutron star restored by combined forces of shear elastic and magnetic field stresses
Within the framework of Newtonian magneto-solid-mechanics, relying on
equations appropriate for a perfectly conducting elastic continuous medium
threaded by a uniform magnetic field, the asteroseismic model of a neutron star
undergoing axisymmetric global torsional nodeless vibrations under the combined
action of Hooke's elastic and Lorentz magnetic forces is considered with
emphasis on a toroidal Alfv\'en mode of differentially rotational vibrations
about the dipole magnetic moment axis of the star. The obtained spectral
equation for frequency is applied to -pole identification of
quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) of X-ray flux during the giant flares of SGR
1806-20 and SGR 1900+14. Our calculations suggest that detected QPOs can be
consistently interpreted, within the framework of this model, as produced by
global torsional nodeless vibrations of quaking magnetar if they are considered
to be restored by the joint action of bulk forces of shear elastic and magnetic
